Sports and Recreation

The Southwest Florida Region has many sports and recreation for tourists and residents. Sports teams in the area include: spring training for the Boston Red Sox, the Minnesota Twins, the Tampa Bay Rays, and the Fort Myers Miracles. The region is also known as the golfing capital of the world that boasts over 150 courses.

Boston Red Sox Spring Training

The Boston Red Sox Spring Training takes place at Fenway South every spring. Fenway South has many amenities for teams including: state-of-the-art training facilities, JetBlue Park (the main ballpark), six practice fields, a rehabilitation center, and other adjoining facilities for both Major and Minor league operations.

Minnesota Twins Spring Training

Since 1991, the Minnesota Twins have done their spring training in Lee County. The Twins have done well in Lee County and had a 21-10 record in the 1991 Grapefruit League and drew in over 100,000 fans which is the best in baseball history. The Twins play at Hammond Stadium which has practice fields and many other facilities.

Tampa Bay Rays Spring Training

The Tampa Bay Rays have their spring training at the Charlotte Sports Park which was opened in 1987, remodeled in 2009, and now seats close to 7,000 fans.

Golf Courses

The Southwest Florida Region has over 150 golf courses, both public and private.  Tournaments include The ACE Group Classic and The Franklin Templeton Shootout.

Great Calusa Blueway

The Great Calusa Blueway Paddling Trail is a 190-mile marked canoe and kayak trail that meanders through the coastal waters and inland tributaries of Lee County, Florida.                   

Lee County Parks and Recreation

Activities include Blueway/Greenway, Conservation lands, classes, events, maps, and videos.

Collier County Parks and Recreation

Activities include aquatic recreation, beaches, conservation, programs special events, and parks.

Charlotte County Parks and Recreation

Activities include aquatic programs, beaches, boat ramps, pavilions, playgrounds, senior games, and youth camps.

The Florida Everblades

“The Florida Everblades were established in 1998 and has been very successful. Some of these accomplishments include: bringing over 3 million fans to their regular season games, has an average of 6,288 fans per game, has attended the ECHL five different times, and has won several awards including the Brabham Cup”.`

The Florida Ridge Air Sports Park

“The Florida Ridge Air Sports Park has 50 acres of land for horseback riding, canoeing-kayaking, bass fishing, airboat tours, and sky-diving. The park also has flight options of thermal, cloudbase, cross-country, and free flight”.

Florida Sports Park

The Florida Sports Park has many racing, sporting, cultural, and social events. The most prominent race is the Swamp Buggy races which are held periodically throughout the year.

The Fort Myers Miracle

The Fort Myers Miracles play at the Hammond Stadium, are a Class A Advanced minor league baseball, and are affiliated with the Minnesota Twins Major League Baseball club.

Hendry County Motorsports Park 

The Hendry County Motorsports Park has many events including: the Limited Late Models, Open Wheeled Modified, Street Stocks, V-8 Thunder Stocks, and Modified Mini-Stocks.

World’s Richest Tarpon Tournament

“Established in 1983, the “World’s Richest” Tarpon Tournament was originally called the Boca Grande Club Invitational which was run by a private club. In 1991, the club discontinued their sponsorship, and the tournament was renamed the “World’s Richest” Tarpon Tournament and became open to the public”.
